We spent our last morning in Hoi An before departing for Da Nang. But we were running late because Edwin's shoe was still at the tailor.

Marble Mountains is in between Da Nang and Hoi An, and there are lots of temples and caves. Along the way, its the same route we took from Da Nang to Hoi An with all the beautiful beach scenery. Reaching the foot of the mountain, there were many touts to buy their marble statues and it was packed with tourists, the majority being local students, probably there for a field trip.

The steps leading up to the mountains are sooo tiring to climb. I was panting and sweating even before I reached the top. The first leg of the tour was spent visiting temples at different locations and I did a little bit of praying when I'm there. There were no concrete steps once I'm up at the top and walking around isn't as easy as concrete steps we climb everyday. We detoured abit and found ourselves in a pretty deserted area with around 10 tombs. And I saw this creepy looking caterpillar on one of them.

Later I visited alot of caves in the mountain. They were very beautiful because of the statues inside the caves. They carved huge rocks to make statues of the Buddha and the Goddess of Mercy. There was one cave that was especially nice, it was located deep in the cave with a small crack at the top that leaked a few rays of light. It was so quiet, peaceful and cooling in there. And the Buddha statue was probably the largest of all the others I've seen.

Continuing to the other caves, they because more challenging and exciting because of the challenge. The entrance of the cave is marked by 1 statue, and behind would look like a dead end, but you actually have to climb up. There are no proper steps set up so its like trekking in Sapa but climbing this time. And that brought me to the peak of the mountain. The scenery was amazing, because you can easily see the beach.

After the climb through the hole, they should sell shirts that say "I survived the Marble Mountians!". I think they'll sell!

Also, within the caves they have different names for them with holes at the top. Somehthing like this.

The last stop on the Marble Mountains was a temple and pagoda. I would say that the pagoda is one of the better ones I've seen thus far.

Finally it was time to head back to the entrance and wait for our driver to take me back to Da Nang. And one point to take note of are the more subtle touts. Because the exit is different from the entrance, "helpful" locals would direct you to the entrance where they will then prey on you by bringing them to their shop to take a look at their wares. And if you're vunerable to their hard sell techniques like what happened to us in Hoi An, you'll end up spending a couple dollars buying something. But I learnt, and I told them thanks but I'm not going to buy anything from you, that's when they will walk away.

Next stop! Da Nang! I found a hotel called Vinapha Hotel that costs 12USD for 2 people, not the cheapest, but it'll do. After having a short rest and a shower, I met Melissa, aka Mel, aka Mad(that's what her friends call her). She brought me to dinner where I had Bahn Xeo, a popular Vietnamese dish. It is a DIY rice paper springroll and pancake. Her friend came as well, called Mira, short for Miralce. Before I continue, I would like to say that they have English names/nicknames for themselves, hence the name Miracle.

After dinner, I joined Mel for her English Club Meeting. She mentioned during the dinner that she has a meeting today and I insisted to tag along instead of having coffee or something. I had a great time during the meeting, Edwin and I felt like the celebrities because we're foreigners and were fluent in English. We had a short presentation of how to present well.

After the meeting, we headed for a foodstall and I tried out some local delights. First up on the menu was Pig's Brain, and the second was Beef with Unriped Papaya.

After the quick snack, everyone had to go back home, but some of us decided to go have a few bottles of beer. So we headed to this makeshift stall where they just had tables and stools along the roadside. The beer was really cheap and the seafood was excellent! The toilets were natural, Army style where you just pee in the bushes. But it rained midway through, and after a few bottles of beer, I had to pee. What do I do? I took a table and held it over my head, and ventured into the bushes to take a leak. It was really funny, some idiot in the rain pissing with a table over his head.

Now it was time for us to rest after a long enjoyable day out. I had to get ready to fly off to Saigon tomorrow afternoon. Today was better than expected.

Another gruelling train trip, and I was so very exhausted after a day trip to the DMZ. Got off the station and went for breakfast and coffee just outside the station before we met Trong who'll bring us to Hoi An.

Oh, I've forgot to mention that Vietnamese coffee is sooo good. They have this metal cup that they stack on top of your coffee mug, and fill it up with coffee powder and hot water. The coffee will be filtered through the bottom of the metal cup slowly and its excellent!

We took a car to Hoi An, and along the highway, we went along the beach which looked oh-so-tempting.

Sentosa is nowhere as good as this!

Checked into An Hoi Hotel, recommended by an American couple we met en-route to Sapa. Had lunch with Trong and went to this antique shop owned by this Guang Dong uncle. We conversed in Mandarin, and being Chinese, we clicked quite well. We went up to view more antiques which were really really impressive. Trong bought some antiques to bring back to Hue to sell.

Afterwards, we headed back to our rooms to have a rest before heading for the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival happens every month during the full lunar on the lunar calendar. The Old Quarter of the Hoi An will turn off all their lights and use Lanterns instead. And they even have this pseudo-rap battle, but the singing version, which was quite entertaining.

The following 2 days were very laid back and not much was done except for relaxation. On the 11th, I toured the Old Quarter, much of the architecture are preserved and many chinese communal houses are situated there. I for one, visited the Hainan Communal House, since I'm from a Hainanese background.

It is a very nice place to hang out, I rented a bicycle and cycled my way through the city. I had to buy a ticket that that grants me admission to 5 different places in Old Quarter, the Japanese Bridge, Communal House, Old House, Ceramics Museum and a Handicrafts Workshop.

I've also visited Tran's Old House, which I found very fascinating. Mr. Tran was some big-shot in Hoi An and thus, to mark his presence, he constructed a house. This house was unique because it consisted of Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese architecture. There were dragons on the bars that supported the roof, Chinese. 5 vertical bars and 2 horizontal bars that made up the 5 elements and a hand, Japanese. Bars made to look like a bow and arrow, which signified prosperity, Vietnamese.

This is the only picture I've got in Tran's Old House, and behind you can see Japanese style construction. Again, its tragic that Edwin's memory stick got corrupted. :( He took the bulk of the pictures in most places.

Hoi An also has a magnificent beach, and how can I not go to the beach. Pfft. The sand, the water, the atmosphere is totally different from Singapore's pseudo-beach, Sentosa. Had a beer and read my book. Shortly after its swimming time! The waves are great, not huge, but still fun to dip into. It could only be explained through visual stimulation.

The last one looks like an Ad for some beach resort. I like it!

After the fun in the water, we had seafood, naturally. It was delicious, and the servings were all very generous. Wet and stuffed, I had to cycle 5km back to An Hoi Hotel. That's a feat!

On the next day, we did alittle shopping, mainly buying gifts to bring home. Got Vietnamese coffee and the metal cups. Some decor stuff. The touts in the market are so exaggerated. Interest alone will suck you in, they will insist on you quoting them a price, obviously you'll quote a low low price, and they say no, and give you a price. And that cycle goes on and on. Unless you really wanna buy, stop and stare, if not move on, or they will follow you and hand you a calculator to key in the quotes.

Once we got our stuff, this tailor-ess or is it seamstress?, Emma, she runs a tailor shop just round the bend of the market. She pulled us to her shop and started her sales pitch of being the awesomest seamstress in town. I think by then, we were trapped, Edwin got a pants and I got a shirt. Was quite happy with the workmanship, fabric and design so I have no qualms. Haha. Edwin also tailor-made a pair of shoes, it looked reeeeally comfortable.

Apparently, you can get any apparel tailored in Hoi An, and the service is quite rapid. My suspicion is that they have some underground factory where they just give sweating tailors measurements and they do it, with some taskmaster wielding a whip. No kidding! Because I went early to collect my shirt, for alteration, Emma was opposite her shop drinking coffee, second time I went there, she was snacking, third time I'm there, she's on the same chair snacking and playing with kids. So... I have no idea how she does it. Up to you and your imagination.

Next stop! To Da Nang, passing through to Marble Mountains, 2 hour visit!

Oh my god, the train ride. 16 hours playing "Dai Di". But the interesting part was when it was nightfall and everyone is getting ready to sleep. People were lying down underneath the benches to sleep. Hammocks strewn across 2 benches. Passengers lying on the chairs. Because it is the most economical form of transport, people just have to get as comfortable as they can even under such harsh conditions.

I suppose this is part of experiencing Vietnam, checked!

Arrived in Hue around 2am and I decided to walk to the hotel we planned to stay at. Along the way we were heckled by locals offering accomodation. Eventually we settled down in a guest house which was really cheap and the first night that I slept through the night and morning.

In the morning, I rented cyclos aka bicycles and cycled round the city. First stop was the citadel. Its a really nice place but it's slowly becoming very artificial like the caves because of its gaining popularity in tourism. With all the new mock buildings they're constructing.

Next, I went to look for Trong, he used to be a tour guide but now he sells Vietwar antiques. I requested a day tour with him for tomorrow to the DMZ(Demilitarised Zone). And I am soooo looking forward to riding in Vietnam(FINALLY!).

After the acquaintance with Trong, I cycled to the One Pillar Pagoda. Walked around the temple and spoke to a monk. He likes my hairstyle(shaven) because we look alike. Funny, and I gave him the praying gesture. The river along Hue is soooo much better than in Mekong Delta.

Finally, the day I've been looking forward to! Riding my own motorbike! I am riding the bike that all the guys want but can't have. The bike that all make all the babes swoon. Proudly presents, not Honda Dream I, buuuuutttttt..... HONDA DREAM II(and the crowd goes wild!).

Edwin will be sitting with Trong and I will be riding on my own, departing Hue to Dong Ha where the DMZ is just north of. We stopped along the way for breakfast and continued northbound. We first arrived at the entrance of the citadel, destroyed during the Vietwar. Saw some preserved tanks and artillery vehicles. Next we took a scenic route along the beach to Cao Tung. Where we visited a large network of ingenious tunnels the Vietcongs used to forced the US Army to retreat.

Then I headed on to the DMZ, which was a huge river which divided the South and North of Vietnam, the 17th Parallel. There were huge patches of padi fields and a musuem there which I learnt much about the life during the war.

The weather during the whole trip wasn't favorable because it was drizzling. And halfway through the trip, my bike ran out of gas and got left behind. I had to push my bike for about 100 metres to the gas station to top up before Trong found me, which was a good 20minutes. I guess it all in the experience, no regrets! And my face had several black spots, not moles, but flies that got splattered while riding since they had no visors. Which was actually quite funny.

I also went to one preserved building and a church that was under attack during the war. The walls of the buildings were all scattered with bullet holes, I think it sort of brings you back to how vicious and merciless wars were and the ones still happening.

Back at our guest house, I took a bathe and got ready to visit Trong at his house to meet his family and take a peek at his vast collection of Vietwar antiques. It was amazing to see the collection he has, from uniforms to pilot helmets, decorations to aircraft parts. I got myself this little pendant that says "Our Lady Queen of Angels, Defend Us in Combat." which airborne rangers kiss along with their dog tags before then jump out of the aircraft.

It was one of the best days in Vietnam, but unfortunately, we met Voi, the heckler that I was so unlucky to have bumped into several times. Even when I shunned him off to use the Internet, he was still able to locate me. Offering decadent services like prostitution and drugs.

Thankfully, today's our last day in Hue and we are bound to Da Nang on a 2am train.

Barely slept on the sleeper train back to Hanoi. Its around 6 in the morning and the hotel wasn't open, so I went ahead to have some breakfast. Pork meat and wanton noodles, it was amazing, and the ingredients were generous unlike in Singapore. We waited around till 8am for the bus to pick us up for the 2 days 1 night Ha Long Bay tour, while waiting we asked to get some "garnish" from the hotel staff. The bus ride was a gruelling 4 hours journey.

Reaching the tourist habour, I got on my designated boat together with 14 other tourists, mainly from Europe, a couple from US, 2 Singaporean elderly backpacking as well. The 2 other Singaporeans I met were very admirable, they have seen more places than myself or 70% of the Singapore population, I feel. Hearing their accounts to the States, Tibet and China were all very envious.

We departed for Ha Long Bay and the first stop was the caves. I didn't like any of the caves because it was very artificial and I think there are places that has much more scenic caves. Although, the caves were not impressive, I especially enjoyed the view of the rocks that littered Ha Long Bay. And being on the boat, it was so relaxing to just chill out, read my book and listen to some music.

Later on, there was a kayaking session for me to get up close and personal with the rocks and it was a more unique approach to just seeing if from a distance. And I met this really really adorable girl that tried to sell me some seashells. She was paddling her boat to tourist kayaking. I can't emphasize how adorable she is, haha, you have to be there to know it.

After kayaking, I had dinner together with the group and beer after the food. It's just like in Europe again when everyone is just so laid back and chatting over a can of beer. Emptying the cooler box, it was time to sleep and ready ourselves for the trip back to Hanoi.

Today is very uneventful, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm heading back to the habour after I had breakfast. And the rest of the time there was just chillax. Dreading the 4 hours bus ride in the afternoon. We spent the rest of today just resting and walking around the city and settled down for cheap beer and springrolls and the daily Vietnamese paper, in English of course. Oh and I got train tickets to Hue. Being overbudget due to the Sapa, Ha Long Bay tours, I decided to go for the cheapest ticket which is a hardseat, 16hours. Good luck to me.

First day in Sapa! I was cold and I love it! Had my breakfast and met my guide for my 3 day tour, Lam! She was very cheerful and easy-going once we got to know each other. She is villager from a village called Ta Van and she speaks excellent english!

Our first day is more of an introduction to Sapa and a day trip to Cat Cat Village. Beautiful village and they got an amazing waterfall and a short row of shops where I had some snacks. They include grilled skewered pork and bamboo sticky rice. I especially like the waterfall, cosy little place and the sound of water. Delightful!

After the trip to Cat Cat Village, it was free and easy for me. Headed to the Sunday market to have a look-see and back to my bed for a well-deserved rest.

Today I will impart on a 2 day trek and a homestay together with a family in Ta Van Vilage. Trekking around the mountains was tough and even tougher when you're stubborn enough to were flip-flops to trek. Had a minor slip as a consequence of my ignorance. Lam handed me 2 alcohol swipes, the the moment the alcohol swipe came in contact with the fresh wound, WOOOOO. I let it all out, in the middle of the rice terraces. My slippers were of no use after that point so I trekked barefoot. Had lunch in Lao Cai Village and made our way to Ta Van village. Witnessed many basic amenities like hospital and school that I feel could be improved on, and were under furnished.

In Ta Van village, I helped out in preparing dinner. Just the simple stuff such as slicing and dicing. There were 4 more Singaporeans(total coincidence) who joined the household for the homestay. Had a sing-song with them the rest of the evening and it was getting cold. All of us would huddle around the fire for warmth. And Edwin taught the daughter of the family English, her name was Ngoan, pronounced as ONE. Dinner was great and rice wine wasn't strong at all.

Last night it was hailing, holy shit. I'm getting used to the cold and I'm loving it! We're finally heading to the rendevous point for transport back to the hotel and subsequently back to Hanoi via the overnight train.

We'll be trekking along our Singapore comrades. Took the easy route since today's very foggy, and we wouldn't be able to see anything anyways. It was a tad better trekking as a larger group because more chances for words to be exchanged rather than everyone focused on which rock to hop on and not fall.

Not long after lunch, we parted ways and I headed back to the hotel for dinner than the train station back to Hanoi to get ready for our trip to Ha Long Bay tomorrow at 8am.

Today I plan to head to Ho Chi Minh's residence and mausoleum, as well as the B-52 Museum. Better sights while I'm strolling through the large parade square.

Afterwards, we headed to the B-52 Museum. I think this part of the story is rather amusing if you have watched the movie, Trainspotting.
I was suppressing the terrible urge to take a dump but was hesitant to do it only if there was a clean toilet, but none to be found. Upon reaching the museum, the massive urge took over me, and I ran to the nearest toilet. To my disappointment, the museum has been out of commissioned for sometime and the toilet resembled something like THIS. Without any choice other than shitting my pants, I snatched a bunch of tissue paper from Edwin, gritted my teeth and took a dump. Once I was done with my business, apart from the feeling of filth, surprisingly, there was a glimmer or triump!

And then the day ends with an overnight train to Sapa, bunk beds of 4 to a cabin, 10 hours journey reaching Sapa at 8 in the morning.

Edwin (JC friend) and myself have decided to go to Vietnam for a backpacking trip for 20 days. I am going to pen these memories down before the facts begin to disperse in my head and this is my story...

With much anticipation, I finally flew to Saigon. At the immigrations, the immigrations officer forced me to bribe since I did not have my hotel address on. Since it was the beginnning of the trip and quite new to travelling, I obliged. It was quite a downer since we haven't even step foot onto Vietnam soil. Took a cab to Pham Ghu Lao and checked into Dong A1 Hotel. We met a lovely fellow CS-er, Sue. She brought us around the city and tasted our first local dish, Pho Ap Chao Don. Was fantastic, and headed to -18degrees for some bubble tea and have alittle sing-song.

It was an early morning, I booked for a day tour to Mekong Delta and a flight to Hanoi, because train would take way too long(3days). Mekong Delta was unimpressive, the river I went through was dirty and not picturesque at all. We had some local honey-lime tea, and elephant ear fish, which was the highlight of the day, which we had to fork out extra cash.

Had a Vietnam-style gondola through the stream and took a boat back to mainland. Hoping Hanoi would not disappoint me, I headed to the airport, soon to arrive in Saigon again on the 14th to 16th March.

We checked into Hoang Thanh hotel last night, and agreed for a tour to Sapa and Ha Long Bay. So we have 2 days in Hanoi before departing for Sapa. Today, I followed the walking tour by Frommer's and walked my way around the Old Quarter experiencing the sights and sounds of the city. And bask myself in the atmosphere of the busy streets in Hanoi.

I wanted to meet some of Hanoi's CS-ers and made my way to Hai Ba Trung street. The bar was Jaspas in Hanoi Hilton, and realised I was under-dressed, so I decided to skip it and made our way back to the hotel. Along the way, we came across a small area along the intersection littered with small stools and people having beef noodles(Pho Bo). So I decided to give it a try, sitting on the small stool and enjoying a bowl of noodles, delicious, mixed with chilli. That was my first experience with Vietnam's staple dish and roadside hawking. It was cheap btw, 1SGD, amazing experience.

Hi there. Am currently enjoying the whole house to myself. Everyone went to Shanghai. But the great thing is, they can't bring the car there, so it stays... with me. *grins* I've taken a spin, feels awesome. Makes me wanna quit taking bike lessons.

Anyways, having the house all to myself, I had an impromptu (mini) party with Val, Kamp, Regis, Weijie. Played some drinking games, this and that. Regis got hammered pretty good. He was pretty much crawling on the floor by the end of it. Regis, weijie and I puked. Pretty bad sight.

Everything ended around 4am, sleep, woke up at 'round 10am. Drove to BBDC, came back at around 4+, 5pm. Well, I didn't clean up the night before, so the whole place reeks of 12 hours-old of drunken spew. Me! Of all people, had to clean up the fuckin' mess. I'd shoot myself if I'm gonna do that again. The whole ordeal was horrible and torturous.

Anyways, cleaning is still in progress. And I've learnt a lesson which is, never invite friends over if you're gonna have a drinking party.

Hey there! There are a couple of things that happened during the past few weeks that I've yet to begin ranting on. So, give art (or other what-nots a break), and listen to my blabber.

First things first, the Indecente blog is gone! Gone for good! That's so sad. Now, I have one less site to surf, thus one less thing to do with the computer.

Next, fuck the guard duties. No sitting, no sleeping?! I could go on all about guard duties, but I'm too lazy typing it all down. We don't need no guard duties, it should be abolished. Everyone needs to rest during their weekends, leave all the work for Monday, don't take away out Saturdays and Sundays! Bitch! (By the way, I'm signing a few more extras soon. HAHA!)

Done with BSTOC and Underslung courses, so I'm waiting for Ex Sea Gale. Boring, can't wait till December comes when it gets really slack. (other than my extras that I have to clear :() Looking forward to December, to catch up on my bike and car lessons. And hopefully go for Mambo night.

Have been hanging out with Starbucks people more, and now I'm going to both outlets at Yishun and Woodlands. But hmmmm, where does my loyalty lie. I'll go to Hard Rock the next free Saturday with Nadiaa and gang. Heard they had wicked fun. And another cool live band to listen to.

Oh yeah, I'll tell you guys all about it after I've been there.

Lastly, (its getting abit long) I'm taking bike and car lessons. Car's going pretty fast, they cleared my lessons quickly. Few more lessons before I can take my TP. Woohoo! But I'm more excited about my bike lessons. Still half-way through it. :( Can't wait to ride to camp. RARA!
